The Malaysian automotive industry is the third largest in Southeast Asia, and the 25th largest in the world, with an annual production of over 600,000 vehicles in 2015. The industry is responsible for 7% of the country's GDP, and employs over 20,000 people.

The Malaysian government has been encouraging the development of the automotive industry since the 1970s, and today there are over 30 local and foreign companies manufacturing vehicles in the country.

The majority of the vehicle production in Malaysia is undertaken by three global automotive companies: Proton, Perodua and Honda. Proton, the largest of the three, is a Malaysian company, while Perodua and Honda are Japanese companies.

All three companies have manufacturing plants in the country, and Proton and Perodua also have assembly plants. In addition to these three companies, there are a number of other companies manufacturing vehicles in Malaysia, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen and Toyota.

The Malaysian automotive industry is export-oriented, and vehicles manufactured in the country are exported to a number of markets around the world, including Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Middle East.
